MG Walk-A-Thon

The 6th, 7th and 8th graders at West Texas Middle School in Stinnett, TX raised $1,266.70 at their Myasthenia Gravis Walk-a-thon which was held Friday, May 10, 2002.

Physical Education teacher, Tammy White, has encouraged the students to participate in a community service project each year. She feels that it is important for the students to learn to help others without receiving anything in return.  Over the past years they have raised funds for several nonprofit organizations.

Retired principal, Grady Wilkinson was very aware of this yearly project and approached the school on the possibility of the students walking for Myasthenia Gravis this year.  MG resulted in his wife Peggy, a special education teacher for the school system, having to retire early.

The school administration and PE teacher Tammy White were very receptive to the idea.  The students provided the Basic Facts of Myasthenia Gravis to all who sponsored them at the walk-a-thon.  I would guess that the majority of those living in the town of Stinnett now know what MG is thanks to these students!

The chapter would like to express our appreciation to Mike Jones, Principal, and Tammy White for their support of this fundraising event.  We would especially like to thank the students who got out and collected all the donations.  They were able to walk the miles that Peggy and other MG patients like her are no longer able to walk.

Peggy and Grady have attended the support group meetings in Lubbock since Peggy was diagnosed with MG.  They now serve on the Board of the Northwest Texas Chapter and are our Amarillo Area contacts.  Peggy and Grady appeared on KVLL TV in Amarillo on Monday, May 20, 2002, to discuss MG and the Northwest Texas Chapter.  The Wilkinson's have recently started a support group for the Amarillo area.  If you are would like to be a part of this support group, please write them at P. O. Box 871 Stinnett, TX  79083 or call 806-878-3007 or  you may e-mail them at gradywilk@arn.net
